Cette semaine le cirque ambulant qu'est le monde de l'art dresse ses tentes à Bale pour la 40eme édition de ArtBasel. J'y arrive légèrement a bout de souffle ayant commence la semaine précédente a New York ou j'ai pu assister lundi a l'ouverture de l'exposition spectaculaire organisée par le Metropolitan Museum de chefs d'œuvre africains et océaniens provenant de la collection Barbier-Mueller. Mardi et mercredi toujours a New York je tenais le marteau pour des ventes d'Editions et de Design, domaines totalement épargnes par le récent marasme économique. Jeudi ouverture a Venise du Punta della Dogana et du Palazzo Grassi avec une démonstration muséale éclatante par François Pinault qui a place la barre très très haut avec la présentation de parties de sa collection d'art contemporain. Vendredi Biennale de Venise, Samedi passage à Genève pour tenir le marteau lors du Gala de la Croix Rouge, dimanche weekend des portes ouvertes chez les galeristes de Zurich puis ce lundi vernissage d’Art Unlimited et de Design Miami/Basel a Bale. Demain mardi vernissage 'First Choice' de Art40Basel.

Je n'ose guère admettre une légère fatigue quand je vois l'extraordinaire énergie, l'enthousiasme et l'infatigable curiosité de Monique Barbier-Muller. Elle a un programme trois fois plus charge que le mien. Je la retrouve a chacun de ces endroits ou elle a déjà tout vu depuis longtemps. Elle a en effet toujours plusieurs longueurs d'avance et les meilleurs artistes recherchent son amitié et conseils. Son engagement pour l'art, son gout résolument hors des sentiers battus et son mécénat discret sont un exemple qui force l'admiration. C'est de rencontrer des personnalités de son envergure qui donne a ce monde de l'art toute sa saveur et qui font de mon métier une activité si passionnante...

This week the world of art is a traveling circus that pitches its tents at Basel for the 40th edition of ArtBasel. I arrived there slightly out of breath, having begun the preceding week in New York where I had the pleasure of attending Monday’s opening of the spectacular exhibition organized by the Metropolitan Museum that featured African and Oceanic masterpieces from the Barbier-Mueller collection. I remained in New York for Tuesday and Wednesday to conduct the Editions and Design Sale, two areas totally unaffected by the recent economic slump. The Thursday opening of Venice’s Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi featured a dazzling museum demonstration by Francois Pinault who sets the bar very, very high with the presentation of parts of his contemporary art collection. Friday was the Venice Biennale, Saturday I paid a visit to Geneva to hold the hammer at the Red Cross Gala, Sunday marked a weekend of open doors amongst Zurich galleries, and then on Monday, the preview of Art Unlimited and of Design Miami/Basel at Basel. Tomorrow is Tuesday’s “First Choice” preview of Art40Basel.

But I hardly dare to admit being tired when I witness the extraordinary energy, enthusiasm and tireless curiosity of Monique Barbier-Muller. She has a schedule that is three times as busy as my own. I found her at each of these places, which she had already seen a while back. Indeed, she always manages to be several steps ahead and the best artists seek her friendship and advice. Her commitment to art, her resolutely off-the-beaten-path taste, and her patronage are examples that have attracted public admiration. It is personalities of her caliber that give the world of art all of its flavor and that make my job such an exciting activity...
